The Language Window
Most of us would say that we are no good at learning languages. Only a minority have that gift, but, we ALL used to have it! After all, we can all speak our own language fluently. Why is that?
The answer is simple: the Language Window. This expression refers to the special ability babies have programmed into them, to be able to learn language. This Window is wide open from birth to 3 or 4 years old. Then it begins to close, at different rates for different children.
Any language presented to an infant while that Window is open will be absorbed and spoken fluently and naturally.
Also, there is no limit to the number of different languages a tiny child can absorb.
Reading is simply written language. It will be learned most easily, by any child, while the Language Window is open.
The tragedy is that, for most of us, that window has been shut long before we are even aware it existed!
Please don't waste your child's extraordinary gift. Share every language you know with them - including reading!
